Being with grief
Grief does not need fixing. You can learn to be with it.
Grief does not travel a straight path. A good day can be followed by a heavy one, and that is not a setback.
Grief asks a lot of the body: it tires you, takes your appetite and disturbs your sleep. Be as gentle with yourself as you would be if you were ill.
Memory and pain often travel together. The pain doesn't mean that remembering is wrong.
Sometimes grief needs company and sometimes silence. You get to choose which feels safer today. There is no right way or timetable for grieving.
Three small steps
- Give yourself permission to sit down for a moment without your phone.
- Say out loud: this is grief, not failure.
- Choose one small comfort: a blanket, a warm drink, music.
