When sleep won't come
The night feels long. The goal is not to fall asleep but to rest.
Trying to sleep keeps you awake. When the goal becomes resting, the body gets room to settle by itself.
At night thoughts are bleaker than in daylight. Conclusions made at night are not worth trusting.
One bad night does not ruin the next day. The body takes back the sleep it needs when it gets the chance.
Watching the clock usually adds pressure. Turn the screen away and let the night pass without counting. Even if sleep doesn't come at once, calm rest is more valuable to your body than constant trying.
Three small steps
- Get up for a moment and go to another room in dim light.
- Breathe out longer than you breathe in, ten times.
- Tell yourself: resting is enough, sleep comes when it comes.
