When it feels like there's no one
Loneliness is the pain of having less connection than you need.
Loneliness says nothing about your worth. It speaks of a need that has gone unmet – and that need is human.
Loneliness makes the mind read situations negatively. That's why reaching out feels hardest exactly when you need it most.
Connection doesn't require a deep conversation. A short message or a glance exchanged at the till is already a beginning.
If contacting someone you know feels too big, start by being near other people without any pressure to talk. A library, a café or a short walk among people can make the world feel a little less distant.
Three small steps
- Send one person a short message: “Hey, I was thinking of you.”
- Go somewhere with other people, even if you don't speak to anyone.
- Write down what kind of connection you miss: being heard, presence or touch.
